Championship Dreams

January 10, 2011

Tonight is a culmination of nearly a month of bowl games.  Some have been a little slow, but we’ve also seen some great matchups.  The Music City Bowl gave us an ending the likes of which I’m not sure anyone has seen.  Tonight we’ll be treated to what has all of the makings of a fantastic BCS National Championship Game between the Auburn Tigers and Oregon Ducks.

This season I had the opportunity to see Oregon play in person at USC.  They pummeled the Trojans and seemed to score at will.  It got to the point of just being ridiculous.  It has been nearly impossible for many teams to keep up with the Ducks this season, and running back LaMichael James has been a one-man highlight reel.

I haven’t seen Auburn in person this season, but I have made a point to watch them as much as possible.  The Tigers have had an incredible season that most people didn’t see coming.  They’ve been led by quarterback Cam Newton, who does things that leave you shaking your head with a dropped jaw.  Throughout the season he’s had an ability to light up a game and ignite a crowd.

For both teams the story is about the offense.  Both have put up more than 60 points on formidable opponents.  Both feature Heisman nominees, with Newton being the winner.  There is a possibility of the scoreboards short circuiting after this tilt.

As an SEC loyalist I’m going with Auburn on this one.  Most fans of southern fried football are hoping the crystal football stays in the conference for the fifth straight year.  I am, however, also looking forward to seeing Oregon at their best for what should be a great game between two electric teams.  So whether you say “War Eagle!” or “Go Ducks!” let’s savor these last precious hours of the college football season.
